Here at StudentEar, we know first-hand that moving to a new city to undertake a degree can be a daunting experience, especially if it is your first time living away from home. One of the primary anxieties for students and parents alike is the fear of becoming a victim of crime whilst at university.
Therefore, we have compiled a list of the top five student locations with the highest crime rates in the United Kingdom to illustrate which areas are actually of potential concern, to help you make the best university selection decision for your self.
However, we cannot stress enough that if your university/university area is listed below, you should not abandon your goals of studying there. This list is not designed to scare you, rather, it should provide you with a more realistic perception of the location you are moving into. As such, you will be more mentally geared towards taking extra precautions, which in turn will lower your chances of becoming a victim of crime.
The crime statistics below are calculated based on the three types of crime most likely to affect students: burglary, robbery, and violent crime.
The numbers themselves show the recorded crime rate per 1000 residents in the student areas of these cities.
The five most dangerous student areas are:
1) Bradford – Bradford tops the list with a whopping 90.2 crimes per 1000 residents (The numerical breakdown: 3.5 per 1000 for robbery, 10.4 per 1000 for burglary, and 76.3 per 1000 for violent crime)
2) Central London (Courtauld Institute of Art) – The Courtauld Institute of Art in Central London comes in at second with 78.7 crimes per 1000 people. It is worth noting however that city centres tend to be the highest crime areas in general; it is no surprise that nearby London School of Economics is ranked sixth. (The Numerical Breakdown: 13.5 per 1000 for robbery, 15.5 per 1000 for burglary, and 49.7 per 1000 for violent crime)
3) Middlesbrough (Teesside University) – Teesside University’s student area has a crime rate of 78.5 per 1000 residents. (The Numerical Breakdown: 2.3 per 1000 for Robbery, 12.4 per 1000 for Burglary, and 63.9 per 1000 for violent crime)
4) Southampton – The student area crime rate (largely based in the Portswood area) is 77.9 per 1000 residents. (The Numerical Breakdown: 3.5 per 1000 for robbery, 11.1 per 1000 for burglary, and 63.3 per 1000 for violent crime)
5) Lincoln – The University of Lincoln comes in fifth with a student area crime rate of 74.7 per 1000 residents. (The Numerical Breakdown: 1.4 per 1000 for robbery, 10.2 per 1000 for burglary, and 63.2 per 1000 for violent crime)
To put these statistics in context, the university with the lowest crime rate was the Harper Adams University in Newport, Wales; with a student area crime rate of 21 per 1000 which is over four times lower than Bradford!
We’d like to reiterate that these statistics should not scare you away from the aforementioned locations. However, they provide a more authentic perception of the student areas (you certainly wouldn’t hear these statistics in an open day tour!)
